Cheapest countries to visit, ranked by what a day actually costs

Most "cheapest countries" lists are opinions. This one is arithmetic: every country in our index is scored by the average mid-range, shoulder-season daily cost of the cities we track inside it — accommodation, food, local transport, activities and miscellaneous spending, per person, in USD. Flights and visas are deliberately excluded so the comparison stays apples-to-apples.

How this ranking is built

For each country we average the mid-range shoulder-season daily total of every indexed city it contains, then sort ascending. Countries with a single indexed city use that city as the baseline rather than pretending to a national average. Exchange rates are fixed as of 2025-05 so rankings move with real prices, not currency noise. The ranking is purely cost-based: it does not weight safety, visa difficulty or airfare, all of which can change the true cost of a trip more than a $5/day difference in this table.

Bottom line

Destination choice dominates every other budget decision. Moving from Switzerland to Nepal at the same travel style changes the daily figure by 7.7× — more than switching from mid-range to budget, more than travelling off-season, and more than any booking tactic. Pick the country first, then optimise style and season inside it.

The five cheapest at a glance

Top five cheapest countries by average mid-range daily cost
#CountryBudget / dayMid / dayWeek (mid)Month (budget)
1Nepal$42$94$658$1260
2Cambodia$47$108$756$1410
3Vietnam$50$114$798$1500
4India$53$118$826$1590
5Egypt$52$120$840$1560

Weekly figures are seven days of mid-range spending; monthly figures assume budget-tier spending for 30 days and no long-stay rent discount. Booking a month-long apartment instead of nightly rooms typically pulls the monthly number down further — the cost-of-living pages show that split.

Cheap by region, not just by country

Country rankings hide a regional pattern: once you know which region you are flying to, the affordable options within it cluster tightly. If your flight budget locks the region, use this table to find the cheapest entry point inside it rather than chasing a country ten time zones away.

FAQ

Common questions

What is the cheapest country to visit right now?
Nepal ranks first in our index at about $94 per person per day mid-range in shoulder season — roughly $658 for a week on the ground before flights. Budget travellers there average $42/day.
What are the top 5 cheapest countries to travel to?
1. Nepal ($94/day), 2. Cambodia ($108/day), 3. Vietnam ($114/day), 4. India ($118/day), 5. Egypt ($120/day). All figures are per person, mid-range, shoulder season, and cover accommodation, food, local transport, activities and miscellaneous spending — flights and visas excluded.
How are these countries ranked?
Each country's score is the average mid-range shoulder-season daily cost of every city we track inside it, drawn from our 68-city cost model. Countries with one indexed city use that city as the baseline. Ranking is purely cost-based — it does not weight safety, visas or flight prices.
How much does a month in a cheap country cost?
At the budget tier, the five cheapest countries here run about $1260–$1590 for 30 days of on-the-ground spending. Long-stay rent instead of nightly rooms typically cuts that further; see the cost-of-living page for each city.
Which country in the index is the most expensive?
Switzerland tops the list at about $728/day mid-range, mostly on accommodation. The gap between it and Nepal is roughly 7.7×, which is why destination choice outweighs almost every in-trip saving tactic.
Are flights included in these numbers?
No. Every figure is on-the-ground spending only: accommodation, food, local transport, activities and miscellaneous. Long-haul flights, visas and travel insurance sit outside the model so the country comparison stays apples-to-apples.
